Harry's hunting again

Warning! If cats hunting prey bothers you, you will want to skip this entry. Yesterday, Harry was sick all day. I think he may have eaten a little toxic frog. Although we only let the cats out in the screened lanai, small critters like those tiny frogs, and lizards can get in. Harry loves to hunt. And he is very good at it. We try to take the frogs if we see them, but I guess we missed one. But today, He is back to normal and out in the lanai hunting again. Below is his "catch" of the day. He was very proud...we don't take the lizards, as he doesn't eat them. But as you will see below, they do "play" with their prey before killing it.

In the photo below, he is bored with the lizard, but will not allow Chloe to play with it. Soon after this the game was over.

I hope I don't get hate mail over this. But I find the hunting ritual of cats interesting. And after Harry was feeling so bad yesterday, I wasn't about to interfere with his fun. Those of you with cats will understand.

  1. Cats are so funny! I particularly like the standoff between the two cats. I question you rparenting skills - you can't even teach the kids to share their toys! LOL!

  2. So glad Harry is back to hunting. My Pumpkin loves to catch and play with lizards also. She is rather good at it too. I get tickled when, every now and then, a lizard will bite her on the nose.

  3. Can I invite him over this summer to catch scorpions at my house? I have heard that cats are immune to the stings...and I KNOW I'm not! ick ick ick! I would gladly trade for lizards...those don't bother me one bit!

  4. Apparently lizards are not good for cats. My Magic does catch and kill them, then starts eating them and is sick! She keeps on doing it - they never learn from their mistakes do they.

That could be why he was sick.

  5. Glad to see Harry is better. I love your pictures...very good step by step of the "hunting" I think it's great that you are letting them practice what is a natural instinct!

  6. Cats are funny to watch. You'd think after getting sick from a frog, Harry would stick with the food in his dish and not go hunting for trouble.

  7. My cats love to hunt too. They bring me mice and voles all the time (not in the winter, but the rest of the year!) Your cats are beautiful!

  8. My cats just may be the worst hunters... My girl can't be bothered & my boy will only smack the "bug" and then look at his paw to see if it stuck...
